As it turns out (see above), he's a "close friend." I wonder what kind of contribution (musical or lyrical) he made? He's listed last, even after the samples, so if name placement was intended to credit significance, his contribution must not have been very substantial. By the way, I've looked on Madonna's other albums, and there's a Dave Collins listed once or twice, but he's only credited for mastering the albums. I know this because not only do I read every message, but I then re-distribute informational-related messages through the Madonna Information Report daily digest to Madinfo subscribers. These redundant messages containing questions about information that has already been distributed are annoying. Before you waste the time of 700 subscribers to this list with your question which may in fact be a stupid one, may I please suggest the following proactive steps on your part: 1) For God's sake make sure the question isn't answered on the comprehensive Madonna FAQ maintained by Jason Engel at http://www.madonnanet.com/mland/faq/. 2) Regularly check Icon Online's "What's New" site at http://www.madonnafanclub.com/whatsnew.htm. Follow all the links. I have seen fifty messages inquiring about the tracklisting to the various DW releases when that information has been online at this site for longer than a month now, and the fact that that information was online at this site was furthermore posted at least once to the Madonna listserv. 3) Visit the Madonna Information Report Archives on the web at http://www.mlvc.org/digests/madinfo. These reports contain information only and, in fact, ALL information regarding Madonna, Maverick and its artists, Madonna tangentials such as Niki Harris, etc. that has at one time been forwarded through the Madonna mailing list. Every single Madonna Information Report #1 to today's #58 is archived at this site. 4) Consider visiting the Madonna mailing list archive at http://www.mlvc.org/digests. Although if your question is informational in nature it will be included in a Madonna Information Report, which is much easier to search through, you can't miss by checking the discussion that has taken place on the entire Madonna listserv. 5) If you delete many messages from the Madonna mailing listserv without reading them because they annoy you or you don't have time, thus leading to the possibility of your asking a stupid question about information already distributed, consider unsubscribing from the Madonna mailing list and subscribing to the Madonna Information Report by visiting http://www.mlvc.org/lists/madinfo.html. Subscribers to the MIR are sure not to miss any important Madonna information such as on-TV and print interviews and appearances, chart information, etc. 6) If you like sometimes to read and participate in discussion but don't always get to read all of your messages, thus leading to the possibility of your asking a stupid question about information already distributed, then consider in addition to the Madonna listserv subscribing also to the Madonna Information Report by visiting http://www.mlvc.org/lists/madinfo.html. Then make a point to at least read and digest that daily, so that if you have a question you can eliminate that excellent record of Madonna information as a source for an answer to your question before posting a question to the list. If, after exhausting all of these proactive options on your part, you have not found an answer to your question, then you can assume that your question is unique and you should post it to the Madonna listserv. There are no doubt others who are extremely interested in knowing the answer. Those of us who for one reason or another sift through every single message posted to this listserv appreciate your efforts to eliminate duplication, redundancies, and stupidities on the Madonna listserv. His HWIF remix does nothing to improve or expand upon the original....and is pure shit when compared with those Pants Lovers and their remix. Sure, it's danceable, and not utterly horrid, but does it bring anything to the table that makes me want to hear it? Not in my opinion. Calderone's ROL remixes are OK, or fun, I guess, but I don't really like that song to begin with, so it's hard for me to get excited about less-than-the-best remixes of it (which are, by all accounts, Sasha's). I really think Calderone has no clue what the song "SKY FITS HEAVEN" is about and was just utterly lost when he worked on it. I mean what is the point of his remix? To add tempo or rhythm or repetition? The original has all that, and does it all better. I'm so disappointed in Madonna's remixes post-FROZEN -- I think they've really been just average, typical, 1998 club remixes. They'll all be forgotten. On my local radio station the DJ (who I have actually started to get to know quite well as I ring up to vote for Madonna and to request DW every night, and has now gotten to recognize my voice) was running a comptertion. The question was "What character did Alex Guiness play on Star Wars". The first people to ring through with the correct answer would win 12 cans of guiness. Knowing the answer to the question I ran to my phone and dialed the number to the radio station. It was engaged. I kept dialing the number and finally got through. I answered the question correctly (and he recognized my voice of corse - although obviously he knows nothing about me.) and one the guiness, but then the fatal question came. "You are over 18 arn't you." Without thinking I said that I was only 16, but managed to talk him into giving it to me anyway. He said not to tell anyone that he'd given it to me and that I was only 16 or he get fired. I Said, "I'll tell you what if you start to play DW by Madonna more I won't tell anyone." He laughed and promised he'd play it in the next hour. He kept his word and half an hour later DW came on the radio. After he played it he announced the winners and said "The winners where so an so and Gareth in Plymton, who we just played that Madonna song for, because its a great song and deserves to be played more!" I've had such fun with operation DW, I can't wait untill the fourth single is relased (but I hope its POG or Skin and not NRM)! I would like to present the list with my argument as to why I believe that would be a bad decision. While I do actually quite like the track, I believe that it is the commercially safest track on the able, and that there is no risk in relasing it. While that may seem a strange thing to object to let me present my reasoning. If NRM matters is relased it will be a top ten hit in every country, and it will bring the album back into the charts of most countrys mabe even cause it to spend a week or to in the top ten in some countries. If a track like Skin or SFH is relased, it will bomb out in some countries, and will perhaps only draw some attenion to the album in some countries. BUT in some countries perticualrly the UK and Japan and maybe the USA the song would be massive. I personally think that Skin would be number 1 in the UK for sure. It would also stimulate album sales in these countries due its domination of the airwaves, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the album re-enter the top 5 of many countries. Which of these do you think is better................I think definatly the second one......lets face it......a track cannot achieve international greatness by mearly 'not failing' everywhere. Also lets consider something else. What does NRM really tell the average person about Madonna. It tells them that she is capable of writng a radio friendly, pop/dance tune and having a hit with it. She proved that way back in 1983 when she wrote Lucky Star. A track like Skin on the other hand proves that she is the ultimate artist, capable of adapting and changing with the times (perhaps even changing before the times) and also capable of ensuring that she is always one step ahead of every other act in existance. The two statements are not equivalent. First of all, let me say that it is a post like this that makes me glad to be on this list. One of the great things about being here is the (rare) occasion when discussion of Madonna's work, whether it be her albums, songs, videos, or movies makes me get that particular work out and listen to or watch it again with a new perspective based on what a list member has said about that particular work. Alex's well thought out, intelligent analysis of the Calderone remixes of Frozen and ROL is a prime example of this. >Let me try to explain why I think that, at the very least, >Calderone's remix of "Frozen" is brilliant and his remix of "Ray Of >Light," while not definitive, is excellent. While I've always thought his remix of Frozen is brilliant--actually, I think all the F remixes are excellent-- I listened to it again with the following in mind: >and that remarkable percussion sample of the two-note hollow >cow-bell-kind-of-sounding drum ...it communicates the >isolation, lonliness, despair, melancholy, frigidity, death, >separation, etc. that "Frozen" is about succinctly and extremely >powerfully. NOt only are you dead on about this, but those emotions alone made me fall in love with the song all over again. I never "fell out of love" with it--it absolutely pained me to leave it off my top 10 list--but I realized again just what a breathtakingly awesome song it is. >But William Orbit isolates it (natch!) >holds it back--giving it even more power. This is indeed remarkable >production work, in my opinion. Exactly.I also love the way he changes the sound of the drums after the first verse, where it goes from a kind of muted sound to the full-out banging, and if you hear it on headphones, the drums span across the ear fields. Brilliant. >Calderone's remix of "Ray Of Light" is not the essential remix of >that song (Sasha's two are, in my opinion), but it nonetheless >exhibits a similar respect for the original song and its sources of >emotional power and excels mostly in terms of its use of percussion >(which, again, if you don't like fine but your tastes are not >Calderone's fault, so don't blame him). I never appreciated Calderone's remix of ROL--I love the Sasha and Orbit versions--but after *really* listening to it again, I think it's actually pretty good, and it certainly made me want to dance. However, I've noticed he uses the same pattern for the F and ROL mixes--the only other Calderone remix I've heard is Gloria's Heaven's What I feel but can't recall at the moment how it sounds. As you say though, this is his remix sound, but I think this repetition is what annoys so many people, including me. He starts off all percussive and drummy, then enters a vocal loop and repeats it 16,000 times ("you're frozen"/"ray of light") until you have no choice but to yell out "would you get on with the damn song already!!!!!" That's the problem I have with him--let's have some variety please--I guess I should be glad he's not like clap-happy Junior Vasquez as someone else mentioned. But I have to say that once the song (remix) gets going, you can't help but get into his groove. I have yet to hear his remix of Sky Fits Heaven--i'll be going to Virgin soon to see if the DW/SFH imports are in yet. Anyway, thanks for the indepth analysis Alex.
